Why surface preparation matters

The quality of paint, tiles and decorative finishes depends heavily on the surface beneath them. Many visible failures begin with moisture, dust, weak plaster, movement or uneven substrates that were not corrected during preparation.

Inspect before covering

Check for cracks, dampness, loose material, contamination, unevenness and previous coatings. Determine whether a crack is stable or a sign of ongoing movement. Resolve water entry before applying a finish.

Remove weak and incompatible material

Paint cannot strengthen powdery plaster, and adhesive cannot reliably bond to dust, oil or loose coatings. Remove unsound areas to a stable edge, clean the surface and use compatible repair materials.

Control moisture

New plaster, screed and concrete need suitable curing and drying time. Existing dampness may come from plumbing, roofs, external walls or ground moisture. Trapping water behind an impermeable finish can produce blistering, staining and mould.

Prepare for paint

Fill and sand defects, remove dust and apply the correct primer or sealer for the surface and coating system. Protect floors, fittings and adjacent finishes. Mock-ups can confirm colour, sheen and texture before large areas are completed.

Prepare for tiling

The substrate should be stable, clean, appropriately level and able to carry the finish. Confirm falls in wet areas, set out tile lines before mixing adhesive and allow for joints and movement where required.

Inspect the prepared surface

Preparation is easier to correct before the finish is applied. Agree tolerances, junction details and sample areas. Photograph concealed waterproofing or repair stages where future evidence will be valuable.

Signs preparation needs more work

• Dust or loose grains remain on the surface
• Damp patches continue to change
• Cracks reopen after filling
• Floors are visibly uneven or incorrectly sloped
• Old glossy coatings have not been treated
• Repairs have not cured sufficiently
